Athletic Conditioning

Strength Training -VS- Weight Lifting

Strength training is often confused with weight and power lifting which are both discouraged by medical and fitness professionals for young athletes.

Here are some links to articles clarifying the difference:
1.    The Mayo Clinic - Strength training: Ok for kids?
2.    American Academy of Pediatrics – Strength Training by Children and Adolecents
3.    KidsHealth/Nemours Foundation’s Center for Children’s Health Media – Strength training and your child

The WBI Conditioning Program is built from the same principles employed in the hitting and throwing programs – increase proficiency of athletic ability while developing functional strength, versatility and flexibility.  Simply put, this program seeks to develop and enhance an athlete’s overall motor coordination through movement stimulus with various types of exercises and routines.  We believe an athlete must experience and master a variety of motor skills to ensure future athletic success and injury prevention.

This is not a weight lifting* or an endurance program geared towards a specific sport but rather it is a broad-based strength training and movement stimulus development program set to achieve superior athletic ability and conditioning. It acknowledges the fact that not all young athletes are built the same, but all athletes need to master certain key fundamentals in order to achieve both short and long term athletic goals.

These fundamentals are (1) systemic strength, (2) linear, lateral and angular movements, and (3) dynamic flexibility.
